Sports Injuries

A sports injury is, quite simply, any injury suffered while playing sport, or training for sport. In many cases, sports injuries are due to the overuse of a body part. Runners and joggers, for example, might suffer damage to feet, ankles, shins, calves, knees and hamstrings. Tennis players and golfers may present with injuries to wrists, elbows or shoulders.

The most common sports injuries are sprains, strains, knee injuries, swollen muscles, achilles tendon injuries, hamstring tears, shin pains, fractures and dislocations.

At PhysioNow, the vast bulk of our therapists have themselves been involved in competitive sport. Some have experience of treating Olympic athletes, world-ranked athletes and top teams. We know and understand sport – and we know you want to get back to it as soon as possible!

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing developed over thousands of years as part of the traditional medicine of China, Japan and other eastern countries.

Acupuncture refers to the insertion of dry needles into the body at specifically chosen sites for the treatment of symptoms and conditions. These points are in very specific locations and lie on channels of energy or "Qi".

The traditional view is that Qi flows around the body in channels. If the Qi is flowing freely the body is in a healthy state. If there is a problem energy stagnates. The stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points frees this stagnation. Modern science has shown that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce natural pain relieving chemicals called endorphins which assist the body to heal itself and give pain relief.

Acupuncture is practiced throughout the world to provide safe and effective relief for a wide variety of conditions – including pain, anxiety, arthritis, eczema, sports injuries, hayfever, asthma, migraine, high blood pressure, menstrual disorders, intestinal problems. It is also used in the management of pregnancy, and for pain relief in childbirth.

All PhysioNow acupuncturists are fully qualified and licenced, and all are chartered physiotherapists.

The cost of acupuncture sessions can be offset, in the same way as other medical services, by claiming from medical insurers such as VHI, Hibernian Health (Vivas) and Quinn Medical.

Orthotics

Public health guidelines recommend that every adult should aim to walk at least 10,000 steps per day. That equates to 90 minutes, or 5 miles, of walking for the average person.

Unless you have an very active job, however - such as a garda, a nurse, a waitress or a postman - it's very difficult to achieve this level of walking on a daily basis. To stay fit, most people tend to rack up the miles by doing one or more sustained walks or runs.

The problem is, only about 25% of people have a normal running pattern. The rest of the running population overpronates or underpronates, meaning their foot turns too much or not enough. Women have four times as many foot problems as men – mainly due to wearing heels and pointy-toed shoes!

And that's where orthotics come in. Orthotics are custom-made orthopaedic insoles which properly align your feet to avoid and treat injuries, correcting these imbalances by adjusting the angles at which the foot strikes the ground.

Orthotics, however, are expensive, and athletes of all levels should take professional advice before ordering. PhysioNow staff will never prescribe them unless absolutely necessary, and will advise if temporary, cheaper, orthotics will serve your needs.

In the event that orthotics are necessary, our physiotherapists will make a plaster cast of your foot, and then send off the cast to a lab to create a custom-made insole. This should last at least two years.

You may need orthotics if…
  • Your shoes wear out quickly or unevenly
  • You regularly suffer from sore feet
  • You have pain in your knees, joints or Achilles tendon
  • You spend a good part of your day on your feet
  • You play sports regularly
  • You run regularly
  • You have bunions, fallen arches or corns
  • One of your legs is shorter than the other
  • You have knock-knees or bow legs or your feet "toe out" when you walk
